Welcome back to another season of golf. Let's hope that the weather we are having now continues well into the spring.

The course has faired the winter relatively well and if we have a normal spring it should be in peak condition within a few weeks. The exception to this is the “fusarium” or pink snow mold which decided to make a home on several of the greens during the winter, most notably numbers 7 and 2. This is a common patch disease which thrives under the snow. It turns the leaves of the grass brown but in many cases does not adversely affect the plant crown or roots. Therefore, with proper maintenance and good growing weather, this issue will eventually resolve itself. Most grasses are susceptible to snow mold but it is most visible when it appears on a short mowed putting green.

We have started an earlier than normal maintenance program on the greens in order to see recovery as soon as possible. Weather will be a major factor, but in all honesty we don’t expect the turf to be “good as new” until late May. You might experience playability variances on the affected parts of the greens as they grow in, and we apologize for that. Rest assured, these greens are our top priority. Since this disease was diagnosed in mid March, we have been doing everything possible to speed their recovery. We have also implemented a strategy to reduce the risk of this pesky disease affecting us in the future. If you would like further information, please pick up the information sheet we have provided in the Pro Shop or speak to the Greens Superintendent (me) or Randy McCord, the Greens Committee Chair.

Thanks,

Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

Ladies Welcome

I hope everyone weathered the winter well and is keen to begin the 2010 season.

At the ladies closing event last September, 60 questionnaires were distributed which sought feedback on the season and input to this years format. A whopping 60 were completed and returned.

We will have had an opportunity to review the feedback and thank all those who provided direction for the new executive. We plan to hold a general meeting on the first night of ladies golf to share the feedback, review the 2009 financial statement, and discuss options for the 2010 season. Please plan to come to the meeting which will be held after dinner on Tuesday May 4th. The meeting will be held in the lounge. Even if you don’t plan on golfing that day, please attend this meeting which will, among other things, determine what the league will look like for this season.

Your 2010 ladies golf executive is as follows:

Bonnie McKee       Treasurer

Donna East           Secretary

Respectfully submitted by Mary Louise LaBerge, Captain

Note from the President

A new golf season is almost upon us again and I cannot wait to get out on the course.

For the members who do not know me, I have am a Certified General Accountant practicing in tax and small to medium sized businesses mainly. I have been on the board for 14 years in many different positions. I'm married with two young boys who already truly love golf.

My philosophy is to have great communication from members throughout my term and is one reason for this new section in our newsletter. The content in this will vary from month to month.

One big issue to discuss is the watering charges that were laid. As discussed at the annual meeting, there were 49 offences levied from the Ministry of Environment regarding varying issues from 2003 to 2007. The charges varied from missing agreements, information not provided in a timely manner and more water taken than our permit allowed. Well versed in dealing with the Ministry of Environment, our legal counsel suggested that we negotiate a settlement with the MOE instead of fighting the charges. In the end the crown attorney and our lawyer agreed to 5 charges at $5,000 each. Agreeing to settle allowed us to reduce the number of charges against the club down to only 5, but also prohibited us from refuting claims made by the MOE, despite our strong convictions that particular claims were flawed. The majority of the charges stem from 2007 when we had one of the driest summers on record. Watering was done to keep the golf course turf alive.

The club is in the process of looking at all our options for watering the course, from purchasing water from West Perth to drilling our own well. We are still researching all the possibilities as we proceed into the year.

If at any point throughout the year you have questions regarding changes you would like to see at the club, or about club operations, etc., I invite you to contact me via email rsteinbach@sjmitchell.ca, or phone 519-275-7742.

Thanks,
Rob Steinbach CGA, President
