The 2009 golf season has arrived - we
hope...
It has been a long, golf-less winter and
the general consensus seems to be that
we have earned a nice warm spring -
starting right now!
Well, we're gonna test Mother Nature a
bit this weekend to see if she's ready
to let you out on the course - because
we are. This Saturday, we will be
opening nine holes for play (weather
permitting), with each subsequent day's
golf possibilities depending on the
weather. Check the web site ticker and
hours page for course updates.
I'd like to welcome back all of our
members and extend a special welcome to
our new members. We look forward to
meeting you and encourage you to take
part in our tournaments and other
special member events throughout the
season.
If you have not already done so,
please stop by the Pro Shop to pick
up your 2009 bag tags and member
information packages. To stay
informed about golf course news,
please visit
our web site and, of course,
keep reading your monthly
newsletters.
Finally, whether you have a
question, concern or comment, I
welcome your input, so feel free to
email me any time. We're looking
forward to a great golf season and
hope that for each of you, this is
your best yet!

I am sure we are all looking for a nice
spring after this very long winter.
We are planning no major course renovations
this year. We are going to concentrate on
maintaining and improving our existing
course. The old rain shelter on #6 will be
replaced this season
Well here we are, the beginning of April,
the days are getting longer and the snow has
turned to rain. While it is a positive sign
that Spring is around the corner, there are
many detrimental aspects to loosing the snow
cover. Over ninety percent of the property
is now exposed to the elements. The cold
winds lead to desiccation and crown
hydration injury is more of a concern with
the freeze / thaw aspects of overnight
temperatures below freezing and daytime
highs above zero. Having said that, the
greens, tees and fairways appear to have
some snow mould which should grow out after
a few warm rains and some warmer
temperatures. The rough has been beaten up
with snow mould which is some what to be
expected given the long and harsh winter
that we are hopefully finished with. Most of
the damage is superficial and will
disappear once it has been raked and mowed.
Looking forward to an excellent summer of
golf. Please remember to fix your ball
marks, replace divots and rake the traps. It
makes the course more enjoyable for
everyone.
Thanks,
Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

2009
Mitchell Ladies Golf Welcome
The 2009 golf season is
right around the corner and the Ladies Golf
executive has been busy making plans. On the
heels of the overwhelmingly successful 2008
ladies' closing we began discussing the next
year's season.
April 28th is the first
ladies night and we'll run for 22 weeks. As
usual, tees will be closed for the ladies
golf between 4 and 6 P.M. Tee times are
required. A pocket newsletter will be
prepared and distributed to the members so
that you are well aware of what the season
will look like. The executive would like to
invite all the ladies to our annual meeting
which will be held in the golf course lounge
on Tuesday April 28th after dinner. Please
come and hear about the plans for the
upcoming season which will include
invitations to other clubs, special game
nights, door prizes, the Captain's Cup and
details about the ladies closing. It will be
an opportunity to meet your executive, see
some familiar faces, welcome new members,
and provide input to the season.
On behalf of the Ladies
Golf executive, I want to welcome you to the
2009 season. I encourage you to attend the
annual pre-season meeting. It is my first
year as president of the Ladies Golf and I
look forward to working with Heather Purdy,
treasurer and Val Chessell, secretary. I
know that their experience will be an asset
to me. We will be focusing on a variety of
communication strategies so that our members
are kept up to date on events and are well
informed throughout the season. We welcome
your suggestions and feedback. We anticipate
that the 2009 golf season will be filled
with great fun.
Respectfully,
Mary Louise LaBerge

Focus on
Responsible Alcohol Service
The charges laid under the Liquor License
Act against the directors, managers and
bartenders at the Lake Joseph Club have sent
a message to the entire golf industry about
the importance of responsible alcohol
service.
We are in the process of developing an
Alcohol Policy which will be implemented at
the Club. This policy
addresses such issues as the refusal of
service to those who are impaired or appear
to be impaired, as well as a no tolerance
policy to those bringing their own alcoholic
beverages on to the property.
We have a legal obligation to protect our
Liquor License and the safety of our
clients. Thank you in advance for your
patience, cooperation and understanding in
this matter. Please read the following
article which includes incident details and
industry-wide recommendations:
Protect Your Club with Zero Tolerance
towards Excessive Drinking
