Peak Season
Summer is officially here and the
weather continues to delight! Many would
argue that we're due, given the golf
season we had last year. Regardless,
there's lots going on at the club,
including great specials and excellent
events.
The Ladies' Invitational was a great
success again this year. Congratulations
to all of the winners. Please find
results below.
The Men's Invitational is coming up this
month, as is a new event for which we've
received a lot of requests. The Men's
Golf Stag is scheduled for July 24th. If
this event is supported - minimum of 48
paid registrants by July 19th - we are
hoping to make this a monthly event.
This is year two of the newly formatted
Optimist Jr. Golf Tournament. Our
Juniors always enjoy and perform well at
this tournament. See
below for full details.
Enjoy your month as we head into summer!

Well it must be close to
a tie between course conditions and the two
beautiful swans in the pond along 15, on
which is getting the most comments for good
looks. Yes the course is in great condition
now, but personally I feel the swans are a
tremendous addition to the course and Sid
Creek deserves our thanks for making this
happen.
Soon we will be replacing
the old rain shelter near 6 green with a new
one similar to the one on the back nine. Our
cost for this will be limited as we have a
number of much appreciated volunteers to
provide the construction.
Just a couple of
reminders from myself and the Greens
Committee to do your best to keep carts on
the path when using them, and to fix as many
ball marks on the greens as you can.
Fixed ball marks will heal quickly but
if left unrepaired can take up to two weeks
to heal.
The best part of the
season is upon us now so come out and enjoy
the course as often as you can. And if you
do venture off to play a different course,
take note and bring back any ideas that we
could use to make our course even better.
Thank
you,
Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

The golf season is almost at the half
way point. It always goes so quickly.
At this time I would like to thank the
members for their patience with the
conditions of the golf course in the
spring. They have greatly improved and
are back to the superior conditions what
we are used to at the club. Although
Mother Nature was not helpful to us in
the spring, Fred and his staff as well
as the greens committee did a fantastic
job of nurturing the turf back to
health.
As of July 1st the HST will take effect.
There should not be too much change for
the members in terms of pricing for the
remainder of the year until we renew our
memberships.
So far the weather has been on our side
for watering and the well system is
getting closer to being available for us
to use.
Good luck golfing.
If you have questions
or concerns, feel free contact me via
email rsteinbach@sjmitchell.ca, phone
519-275-7742 or maybe even over a golf
game.
Thanks
Rob Steinbach CGA,
President

2010
Ladies League
A
little bit of rain and a little bit of
heat made for a lot of golf in June. The
weather was great for Tuesday night
ladies golf and from the look of the
attendance sheets; we are getting great
participation in the league. This year
we introduced a flat fee of $35 which
entitles the members to participate in
all the game nights, fun nights,
invitation events and an opening and
closing event. It also entitles the
players to sign up for league
competitions and be eligible for prizes
from the beginning of the season to the
end. The membership is 60 women strong!
The
list for the Captain’s Cup match play is
finalized and the matches will be posted
next week. We also introduced a
two-woman fun match play whereby each
team plays another team and competes to
move to the next level of competition.
Details will be announced on July 6th
and matches will be posted in the ladies
locker room. I am pleased to see such
great uptake on the new format with
almost 50% of our league members
participating. It suggests that we were
ready to mix things up a little.
Speaking of mixing things up, we invited
the ladies from Ironwood and Seaforth in
on the 29th for a fun scramble. We
treated our guests to great weather, a
fabulous hot turkey dinner and lots of
laughs. Oh, and there were a number of
prizes, too. These included: closest to
the pin awards going to Barb Box, Susan
Cronin and Bonnie Janmaat; closest to
the line for Susan Cronin; lowest score
to Joan Heywood, Evie Huston, Julie
Nicholson and Lynn Whittemore; most
honest team prize went to Melita Cronin,
Dianne Moses, Nancy Schmidt and Karen
Rose; mystery score prize was drawn and
the recipients were Bonnie Janmaat,
Peggy Willigar, Sandra Mohr, and Gail
Coveny.
The
largest 50/50 draw this season was sent
home with Cheryl Watson from Seaforth.
We’ll have a chance to bring some of
that cash back as we have 14 of our
members participating in a fun night at
Seaforth on July 8th! The beautiful gift
basket of Bath and Body Works, donated
by Lori Houze, was won by June Walkom.
Overall, it was a great night and we
look forward to inviting the ladies from
the Stratford courses on July 27th.
Please stay tuned for the details.
Respectfully submitted by Mary Louise LaBerge

New Wedge Groove
Guidelines
In
the past few months you may have
heard some consternation coming from
the professional ranks about the new
regulations governing the shape and
size of golf club grooves.
Although it would be easy to dismiss
this as being about only the elite
touring players the new rules will
have consequences for every golfer
eventually and you may start to
notice the changes quite soon.
The
new rules deal with groove volume.
This basically means the limits on
grooves on all clubs, excluding
drivers and putters, are going to be
reduced and they will become
shallower and narrower.
The
sharpness of the edges of the
grooves will also be more
stringently regulated on all clubs
will a loft of 25 degrees or more
(roughly your 5 iron through to your
wedges) which will also help to
preserve your golf balls for
slightly longer.
The
aim of the changes is to make it
more difficult to spin the ball from
the rough and so increase the
difference between playing an
approach from the fairway or the
long stuff. So as well as checking
your grooves you might also want to
get some practice in with the driver
as well!
The following are a couple wedge
groove guides for your review:
