On the driving range
Take your game to the next level
by participating in the Bridgestone Challenge. As
with club fitting, ball fitting can guide you to a
golf ball that maximizes your performance from tee
to green through optimizing your ball speed, launch
angle, and spin rates.
Using a sophisticated computer
system, the Science Eye, allows us to enhance your
performance in a complimentary session. Take the
Bridgestone Challenge and find the ball that fits
your game!
Please contact Pro Shop to
schedule a fitting - by appointment only.

GOLF SLANG |
|
AFRAID OF THE DARK
What a putt is when it
won't go in the hole.
THE BEACH
AKA the sandtrap or
bunker. Bring your sunblock.
CABBAGE
Deep, thick, inescapable
rough. Green leafy vegetables are not good for
your golf game.
DAWN PATROL
The golfers who are the
first to play each day, so named because they start
their match at sunrise.
ELEPHANT BURIAL GROUND
Collective term for the
huge mounds found on the greens of certain golf
courses. Where good scores often go to die.
FRIED EGG
When your golf balls gets
buried halfway into the sandtrap. Sunny side up
with two strips of bacon please.
GET DOWN!
A message from golfer to
ball asking it to cease flying - now! Usually heard
after a ball is hit too far or offline; almost
always uttered with great agitation.
HACKER
A terrible golfer. A
person who hacks it around the golf course.
IS THAT ANY GOOD?
Rhetorical question posed
to stunned opponents by a golfer who has just hit a
career-best shot.
JAIL
Where a golf ball usually
lies after a hacker hits it. A place from which
escape is nearly impossible. Deep rough, woods,
buried lies, and other unpleasant places represent
jail for a golf ball.
KNIFE, THE
The one iron. The toughest
club to hit. If you carry a knife in your bag,
you're either a real player, or a phony who wants to
look like a real player. A few swings with the knife
will reveal the true you.
More to come next month...

An Early Summer
Unlike last year at this time, there has
been plenty of great golfing weather to
take advantage of. The season and the
schedule are ramping up and I wouldn't
be surprised if some of you already have
more rounds under your belt than you
played all season last year!
The Opening Scramble was held on May
15th and was a really great tournament.
Congratulations to all winners. For
results and pictures, see
below.
The Ladies' Invitational is taking place
later this month. We are now accepting
entries for this incredibly popular
tournament. Click
here for details and be sure to get
your entry in soon to avoid missing out.
There are some great deals in the Pro
Shop. See below
for details. Speaking of Pro Shop
merchandise, after this month, many of
our products and services will become
subject to the new Harmonized Sales Tax
(HST). Please see President Rob
Steinbach's message
below for more details.
Finally, we have extended our
golf deals until
the end of the season. Be sure to take
advantage of them this year by bringing
guests out to enjoy our golf course and
amenities.
Enjoy your month as we head into summer!

Last month we commented
on the new well and several questions have
come in so here are a few more details:
The well was drilled to
246 ft, past the point of first water in
order to achieve a good flow rate. At the
rate achieved, the current well will supply
about half of the water needed to satisfy
our irrigation requirements. This is what we
had hoped for. We are therefore continuing
to pursue the two well option in which both
wells will work together to give us the
water flow needed.
Currently the water taken
from the river is not very clean, and
clogging of sprinkler heads during night
watering is a common occurrence. This
results in poor water coverage and when
summer comes early as it did this year, the
effect is noticeable. Once we are using well
water - a clean water supply - this issue
should be a thing of the past.
We are working toward
using the first well as soon as possible to
provide a limited but much-needed water
supply during periods when we cannot take
water from the river because limitations
imposed by our “Permit to Take Water”. We
must wait for further permitting and
approval from the Ministry of Environment
before we can move on the next stage of the
project.
The greens damaged by the
snow mould are recovering quite nicely
although a couple of them are still a bit
bumpy in places as they continue to fill in.
Even with the “crazy” weather this spring,
they have progressed very well from the big
brown patches evident a month ago. We feel
we are well past the point of any major
renovation needed to bring them back
Please continue with your
questions and comments.
Thank
you,
Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

The golf season is well on its way and
we are finally getting some good growing
weather. The course is starting to come
around and June should be better.
The implementation of
Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is coming
soon and it will impact businesses of
all sizes, inlcuding ours. Briefly, HST
is the combination of the existing
Provincial Sales Tax (PST) at 8% and the
current Goods and Services Tax (GST) at
5%. The overall tax rate remains the
same, but the difference will be seen in
the applicability of taxes to particular
products and services.
Any items that
previously were not subject to PST will,
as of July 1st, be subject to this tax.
Here at the club, this will apply to
items such as green fees, tournament
entry fees and memberships.
While we do
anticipate that the HST may negatively
impact Pro Shop sales, we also expect
that it may eventually serve as a
catalyst for cost reduction in some
areas of operations.
We currently pay PST
on the purchase of equipment, office
supplies, parts, telephone costs and
other related items. Once HST is in
place we will be able to recoup all the
HST we pay on our expenses when we file
our HST return.
If you have questions
or concerns, feel free contact me via
email rsteinbach@sjmitchell.ca, phone
519-275-7742 or maybe even over a golf
game.
Thanks
Rob Steinbach CGA,
President

2010
Ladies League
May has brought three
out of four Tuesdays with great weather
for our ladies league. We had quite a
number of ladies come to the course for
dinner in spite of the one day of
serious rain. This helps support both
the ladies league and the club, so I
send out a special thank you to all who
came out that night.
We have had a very
favourable response to the new format
with ladies joining the league for a fee
of $35.00. This fee entitles you to
participate in all fun nights, game
nights, the opening and closing events,
and be eligible for prizes in all league
sponsored events. The last day to sign
up and pay for the league is June 8th.
Please see Bonnie McKee, our treasurer
to submit your payment.
May’s 50/50 winners
included June Walkom, Helen Pinder,
Bonnie McKee, and Judy Dejong. On a
wickedly, rainy Tuesday game night the
longest drive went to Janet Buchanan.
We held our league
opening event On May 25th. A shotgun
start at 5:30 sent 44 golfers out in
picture perfect golf weather. From the
sound of laughter in the lounge
following the event and all through
dinner, it is safe to say, a good time
was had by all!
Numerous prizes were
awarded as follows:
Lowest score
at (-3) went to Mary Lou Scott,
Dianne Gaffney, Inez McTaggart, and
Judy Bowman
Highest score
went to Janice Hannon, Colleen
Appleby, Donna East and Shirley
Gallant
Closest to the
pin on #3 was taken by Josie
Nyenhuis and the longest drives
on #4 went to Mary Lou Scott and
Helen Brodhagen.
A door prize
of an Epicure gift basket went to
Mary Louise. Thanks to Bonnie McKee
for the generous donation of the
door prize.
The Ladies Golf
Executive will be announcing details of
the season’s Captain’s Cup competition
within a couple of weeks. Watch the
bulletin board in the ladies lounge for
details or see any of the executive in
the lounge after golf on Tuesday
evenings. It is very important that all
who wish to compete have accurate
handicaps and that equitable stroke
calculations are used. See the bulletin
board for the details of equitable
stroke.
Mitchell Golf and
Country Club has their annual Ladies
Invitational set for June 30th. Please
click
here for details.
June will bring a
game night and a fun night so brace
yourself for more laughs!
Respectfully submitted by Mary Louise LaBerge
