Well, summer's officially over...
Despite having a fabulous season of
golf-friendly weather, it's still
shocking to note that we're in our last
month of golf here at the club.
At this time of year, there are
discounts to be had for members and
non-members. Come in and check out our
shop-wide sale.
And be sure to tell family and friends
about our discount
golf packages and special
membership
promotion.
Our
Members' Closing Scramble is
Saturday, October
16th. This late-season event is always a
lot of fun,
and will go on rain or shine, so dress
accordingly! And when the day is done,
please be sure to clean out your locker
to allow for off-season locker room maintenance.
I hope you get a few more rounds in
before the season is completely over and
wish all of our members a great
off-season.
Sincerely,
Tim Ertel, Manager

Well another
golf season is slowly coming to an end.
At least the summer provided us with
some beautiful golf weather.
There are no
big plans for the golf course this fall.
Most of our resources have gone into
solving our water problems. The new
ladies tee on #8 will be finished
shortly and in play early next year. We
also plan on removing some of the
nuisance poplar trees. It is also that
time of the year for aerating. We will
be doing this Monday Oct.4th -Tuesday
Oct.5th (weather permitting). Thanks
for your patience while we undertake the
most important cultural practice for our
greens.
The month of
October is time we put the course to bed
for the winter. This includes the
blowout of the irrigation system,
dormant fertilizer applications, blowing
and mulching of leaves and treating turf
for winter snow mould protection.
Thanks for
another great summer of golf and looking
forward to seeing you all in the spring.
Lets hope for a short winter.
Thank
you,
Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

2010
Ladies League
September was a month filled with lots
of fun and food at the course. Mid month
we enjoyed the annual perch dinner and
the lounge was packed! In addition to
sourcing out the fish, Bob Bogdon of
Scotiabank donated a number of door
prizes for the event, including a golf
blanket which would have come in handy
for the close event.
We had almost 60 women attend the close
event on the 26th and no one went home
empty handed! The executive arranged for
every participant to receive a stainless
steel water bottle with the Mitchell
Ladies Golf design on it. The tables
were dressed with fall floral bouquets
which went home as door prizes to a
number of lucky recipients including
Mary Martin in recognition of her
birthday. Enough about pretty
things...let’s get to the golf!
We experienced a moment of silence at
the close event to mark the loss of
Dorothy Jackson, a long-time member who
had such a sense of ‘fun’ around the
course. So much so that the 2010 ladies
executive decided to dedicate the
two-person fun match introduced this
year to her memory. We had over two
dozen members signing up to play in the
matches and all participants received a
glove for their participation. Dorothy
epitomized the true intent of the fun
match – a genuine enjoyment of the game,
mixing with players of differing skill
levels, and having fun. We want to thank
Ross Jackson for allowing us to dedicate
the event in her name and especially for
providing the beautiful plaque in her
memory.
I personally want to thank Dona East and
Bonnie McKee for their support in my
last year as Captain. We had a few
contentious issues to address and they
were managed very well. I enjoyed my
time as Captain and, want to thank all
the members who stepped up and
volunteered over the course of my two
year term. In particular, Heather Purdy
and Janet Buchanan were ever-ready to
lead their expertise and that is very
much appreciated. Lori Houze provided a
critical role that should receive
special thanks. Allowing her name to
stand for the inaugural year of Events
Coordinator and what a wonderful job she
did. All events, whether it was a fun
night, game night, match plays, and
invitation to other clubs, she was
organized beyond words and that resulted
in one successful event after the other.
I want to thank Judy De Jong and Helen
Brodhagen for stepping up to fill two
vacancies on the board. Bonnie McKee is
stepping into the role of the Captain
and Donna will fulfill her second year
as secretary. I wish them great success
next year.
In the meantime, it is only early
October and much golf yet to be played!
Respectfully submitted by Mary Louise LaBerge.

Note from the President
|
Well we are down to the final month
of the golf season. My first year as
president has been a fun and a
challenging one. We, as the board,
are reviewing the operations for
areas of improvement and
efficiencies.
The board has decided that, as of
October 31st, we will close the
course and lounge. The clubhouse
will be open for event rentals.
Closing at this time will assist in
procedures associated with our
fiscal year-end. In addition, this
corresponds with the expiration of
our golf cart lease agreement, with
the carts being picked up for winter
storage.
Weather
is a big factor at this time of the
year as it can be nice one day and
wintry the next. Therefore, to
ensure the golf course is ready and
properly prepared for winter, it is
in our best interest to close early.
Please respect this decision and
allow the course to rest for the
winter by resisting the urge to
squeeze in additional rounds after
October 31.
This is also the time of the year
that we select a nominating
committee. This committee will be
looking for candidates to fill 6
positions (of 2 year terms each)
that are going to be vacant as of
the end of this year. If you are
interested, please contact a member
of the current committee (see
website for committee contact
information). You may also contact
Tim or me directly.
Feel free to forward any questions
or concerns to my email at
rsteinbach@sjmitchell.ca or contact
me at 519-275-7742. Or I’m always
up for a round of golf.
Thanks
Rob Steinbach CGA, President

Cart Program - 2011
In 2011, we will again be
offering our discounted green fee and cart program for non-members. For your friends and
family that also like to golf, just not as often as
you like to, these discounted pre-paid tickets
are the perfect solution.
TickeTrack's prepaid discounted

they buy upfront. The more rounds they buy, the more
money they save. Tickets are fully transferable so
can be shared between your family and friends.
These packages make a perfect
gift for family, friends or employees and are great
for those who frequently bring guests out to golf
with them. And if you buy now, you'll pay 2010 rates
and avoid any price increases that may take effect
come the new year. And what's more, tickets are
valid for two years from the date of purchase,
giving golfers ample time to use them.
