The old adage “Good
things come to those who wait” couldn’t
be truer because we enjoyed the best
golf weather of the season in September!
With September came
the annual perch fry dinner and over 60
women showed up for that meal - always a
winner. On the topic of
winners, September saw a handful of
winners for a variety of contests. The
Tuesday night 50/50 winners included
Shirley Gallant, Gail Bogden, and Sandra
Turpin (a guest from Sault Ste. Marie).
We had our last game
night before the closing with “the long
and the short of it”. One player plays
all shots outside of 100 yards of the
green and the second player plays all
the rest. It was a challenge for some
and a relief for other but most agreed
that it was fun!
LADIES CLOSE EVENT
There were 60 players
out for the ladies golf closing event.
The day started with a light drizzle but
quickly cleared up resulting in a
beautiful, sunny fall day. After a
welcome from the captain, the members
took a moment to reflect on the recent
passing of two long-time contributors to
ladies golf. A delicious turkey dinner
was prepared by Julie and her kitchen
crew and appreciated by all! After
dinner, the awards were distributed by
the executive beginning with the regular
season play. Lori Houze took the prize
for the most birdies and Darlene
O’Donnell produced the most chip-ins on
Tuesday nights. Aukje Roe shaved a
whopping 6.6 points off her handicap
this season and walked away with the
“most improved” player award. The winner
of the Captain’s Cup consolation round
was Janet Buchanan and the winner of the
Captain’s Cup was Judy DeJong.
Congratulations to all the winners!
Speaking of
winners, Pam Torrance went home a double
winner taking the 50/50 draw and a cash
prize on hole # 10 while Donna East won
the cash draw for hole # 17. The
scramble format included a number of
winners including Gail Coveney, Sandra
Mohr, Susan Cronin and Sharron Cheoros
taking the low gross prize. Most honest
prize went to Marge Campbell, Carol
Murphy, Donna East and Mona Gabler.
There were tow foursomes selected as
mystery score winners so hardly anyone
went home empty-handed. Other prizes
awarded went to Jean Cook for the
closest to the zig zag line, and longest
drives went to Helen Pinder (nice way to
remember her birthday), Susan Kurtz and
Janet Buchanan.
A survey was
distributed at the ladies close to
collect feedback on the season and to
obtain some direction on the use of any
surplus funds from the ladies golf.
There was a 100% return rate for the
surveys which might suggest that members
really wanted to be heard or that they
were interested in getting their name in
a special draw for the responses! Either
way, we will tally the results and share
them at the April AGM. Donna Lynn
McLaughlin won the special draw prize
for returning her survey.
2010-2011 LADIES
EXECUTIVE
A new slate of
members will be assuming the following
roles in the executive next season:
Lori Houze
(Events Coordinator)
Donna East
(Secretary)
Bonnie McKee
(treasurer) while Mary Louise will
complete the last year of the two year
term as Captain.
We bid farewell and
expressed our gratitude to Val Chessell
and Heather Purdy for their two year
stint as secretary and treasurer,
respectively. We know that they will be
a great support to our new executive
next year.
Congratulations go to
Courtney Tolton for taking the club
championship on the long weekend in
September! If she is this good at her
age, just imagine what a few more years
will do. Watch out for this one!
There is still some
golf weather ahead and the club closing
event to look forward to on Saturday
October 17th.
