WHO WANTS TO
THINK ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON? |
|
We know, we know, the kids aren't even back to
school yet and we're talking to you about
Christmas?!? After all, there's probably a good two
months of golfing weather left, right? We couldn't
agree more.
However, our Banquet Hall and Lounge schedules are
already filling up fast with holiday parties so we
thought we better let you know that if you'd like to
reserve one of these spaces for your family,
business or personal event, please
contact us
as soon as possible.
If you would like to hold your
festive gathering here at the Golf Course, be sure
to book your event soon!
See the Beyond Golf section of
our web site for full details about our
Lounge and
Banquet Hall venues as well as our
Menus or contact
Tim for available dates.

Into September already???
Where does the summer go? As good of a
summer as we had this year, the
arrival of September fills our heads
with thoughts of back-to-school and
the dreaded cool-down that will
inevitable lead us into the cold,
dark, golf-less days of winter.
Despite the great weather Mother Nature has
bestowed on us over the past few
months, we're left still wanting
more. Not to worry though, lots of
great events still to come on our
golf calendar. See
Upcoming Events below.
As always, be sure to check our
schedule of events for tee
closings and up-to-date event
information before coming out to the
course to play a round.
August was a busy month event-wise. We held
Club Championships for all member
segments and results are posted
below in our
Tournament Results section and
in our Jr. Club
Championships Summary.
Please note that we are continuing our
Golf Specials throughout the
rest of the season, so tell friends
and family and get them up to the
course to enjoy a round - an
economical and entertaining way to
enjoy a summer's day.
As the season
winds down, many of our staff who
are students will be returning to
school. I would like to wish them
the best of luck with their studies
and personally thank them for their
support and dedication during our
busy 2010 season!
Sincerely,
Tim Ertel, Manager

The great golfing weather continued into the
month of August but unfortunately it has not
been good for the turf on the golf
course. The lack of rain and hot, humid
weather has put great disease pressure on
our fairways. The older grass on the front
nine has been affected by "anthracnose", a
disease which produces patches on the
fairways that look like dry spots. The
fairways on the back nine have been affected
by a fungus disease called "dollar spot"
which is visible as small brownish circles.
These turf issues are a temporary appearance
issue and do not really affect play and so
we decided to forgo the expense to treat the
fairways several times. If we had full
watering capabilities (discussed below), we
may have decided differently. With some
fertilizer and rain they should bounce back
to the conditions we have come to expect.
Speaking of rain or lack thereof, we can not
presently pump out of the river to irrigate
as our water permit states when no water is
flowing over the dam, no water taking will
be permitted. For the last two weeks, all
our water taking has been coming out of our
first new well . Only greens and tees are
presently being watered which is also not
helping our fairway conditions. The fairways
have not seen water for two weeks now. The
only good thing is everyone's drive seems to
go a little further now!!!!.
Construction of the new rain shelter on #6
has started and should be completed soon.
Thanks to all the voluntary members who have
taken this project on.
Lets all hope this great weather continues
into the fall but with a little rain, (just
at night though)!
Thank
you,
Fred Schmoelzl, Golf Course Superintendent

2010
Ladies League
August’s weather couldn’t have been
better, if you like hot, hazy and humid
conditions! Unfortunately, between the
extreme heat and vacations, attendance
was down for a couple of nights. We did,
however, have a full house for the last
‘fun night’ of the season. Lori Houze,
our events coordinator outdid herself
with a challenge on every hole, plus a
prize for low score and several mystery
score prizes were awarded. By the end of
the evening, almost everyone went home
with a prize, even if it was a tummy
full of a fabulous meal prepared by
Jacqui and her kitchen crew.
Both June Walkom and Colleen Appleby should
be buying lottery tickets because August
proved to be a winning month for both of
them. Between door prizes and 50/50
winnings they pretty much cleaned up!
Way to go ladies!
The executive has been working on the final
ladies league event, the close scheduled
for Sunday September 26th. Tee times
will be booked between 11 a.m. and 1
p.m. The sign up sheet is on the
bulletin board in the ladies lounge but
each foursome’s time will be determined
by random draw. The draw will be made by
mid-September. The close event is
shaping up to be a great time. Please be
sure to get your team signed up very
soon.
Time is running out to book your two-person team
match play games so please get those in
before too long. I noticed a couple of
teams had to withdraw from the
competition and we will see if we need
to re-jig the matches to ensure everyone
has a chance to get five matches booked.
One more game night is scheduled before the
close event. Watch for details on
September 7th for another chance to win
a golf related prize. Remember, we need someone to replace
both the Captain and the Events
Coordinator for a two years stint so if
you are interested, please bring your
interest forward to me as soon as
possible. Here’s to the remaining months of summer and
then we’ll ready ourselves for fall
golf!
Respectfully submitted by Mary Louise LaBerge.

Note from the President
|
Hard to believe the kids are going
back to school and the golf season
will be coming to an end. I
personally like fall golf, as a lot
of golf courses are in great shape as
they have received some rain and the
temperatures are still reasonable.
I would like to provide everyone
with a summary of how the operations
of the club work. Our club is
organized as a non-profit
corporation. A board of 12 members
is elected at the annual meeting
held usually early December.
Currently 6 positions are elected
every year and consist of a two year
term. The board then elects the
executive and the committees in the
first meeting of the new board in
January of every year. The board
meets on the second Wednesday every
month. The committees meet more
often when there are issues or items
to discuss.
We have two main staff in Tim, the
Manager and Fred, the
Superintendent. Tim reports
financial, tournament and inside
operations to the board. Fred
reports the golf course operations
to the greens committee and if need
be to the board. The majority of the
concerns or day to day decisions are
made by Tim and Fred. Major changes
or issues will be brought to the
board level.
I hope this provides an
understanding of the operations of
the club. As a non-profit our goal
is to offer value by providing the
best quality golf course and
facilities with reasonable rates.
Any profits that are realized are
directed back into operations and
upgrades.
If you have any further questions or
are interested in being a board
member, please feel free to contact
myself or any board member for
further information.
See you on the course.
Feel free contact me with any
questions or concerns via email
rsteinbach@sjmitchell.ca, phone
519-275-7742 or maybe a golf game.
Thanks
Rob Steinbach CGA, President
